Case Study: Adaptive Reuse Ministry & Community Center
9.23.2026
Project Overview

A former open distribution center was reimagined into a vibrant 22,000-square-foot, two-story ministry and community facility designed to support worship, education, fellowship, and outreach. Through thoughtful adaptive reuse
and strategic renovation, approximately 10,000 square feet of previously unfinished space was transformed into a welcoming environment that serves youth, adults, families, and the broader community.
The Challenge

The existing refrigerated space offered abundant square footage but lacked the structure, accessibility, and amenities needed to support a
growing ministry. Our design team was challenged with converting a large industrial space into a flexible, people-centered environment while maximizing the value of the existing facility and accommodating diverse ministry programs.
The Solution
The design focused on creating a highly adaptable facility that balances functionality, accessibility, and community engagement. Existing open volumes were reorganized into a variety of ministry, educational, and gathering spaces while maintaining flexibility for future growth and evolving programming.
Key features include:
- Dedicated middle school and high school ministry areas
- Adult Bible study rooms
- Flexible classrooms and multi-purpose meeting spaces
- Gathering and event spaces for church and community activities
- Coffee bar and informal fellowship areas
- Additional restrooms and support spaces
- Worship area with stage and production capabilities
- Elevator providing full accessibility between levels
Strategic space planning transformed the industrial character of the former distribution center into warm, inviting environments that encourage connection and engagement.
Design Highlights
- Adaptive Reuse: Repurposed existing distribution facility, extending the life of the building while reducing the need for new construction.
- Flexibility: Multi-use spaces support worship, education, events, and community outreach activities.
- Accessibility: Inclusion of an elevator and accessible circulation paths ensures the facility accommodates users of all ages and abilities.
- Community Focus: Designed to serve not only the congregation but also community groups and events.
- Future Growth: Flexible layouts and scalable programming spaces allow the facility to adapt to changing needs over time.
Results
The completed project successfully transformed an underutilized industrial building into a dynamic ministry and community destination. The renovated facility provides a welcoming and functional environment that fosters worship, learning, fellowship, and outreach while positioning the organization for continued growth and long-term service to the community.
